About Us Connecticut Branches began with the idea that student transportation should be so much more than just a taxi service. As a result, two social workers started developing the Connecticut Branches philosophy of student transportation. This philosophy is based on four main components; Safety, Reliability, Communication, and Experienced drivers with specific human services skills in understanding and supporting the needs of children and adolescents. We support the needs of our passengers through developing an individual transportation plan. This vision was implemented and Connecticut Branches opened its doors in May 2012.
What is a Student Transportation Plan? Student transportation is utilized in several circumstances. Each student requires an individualized transportation plan. When a child is removed from their home and placed in care, whether it be a foster home, group home or treatment facility, the transportation plan is developed to support the student's academic stability and consistency within the child's school of origin. This plan results in less social, emotional and academic disruption for the child at an already tumultuous time in their life.
Sometimes a mainstream school is not the appropriate academic placement for a child due to their behavioral, cognitive, or medical needs. A student transportation plan is developed to support these students so they may attend specific schools across the state that could better meet their needs.
Safety At Connecticut Branches we believe safety is our top priority. Our safety protocols and procedures begin before we even hire a driver. All potential drivers undergo a vigorous background check including, criminal (FBI), sex offender, DCF, motor vehicle and substance abuse. To ensure they can meet the physical demands of the job, they also must hold a DMV medical card approving them for duty as well as a V endorsement on their driver's license. All of our drivers must maintain the skills and knowledge base of supporting the needs of children and adolescents. We have the best of the best drivers because we select only the top candidates and provide them with support regularly. Our vehicles are all recent models and maintained above and beyond state regulations.
State of the Art Tracking and Reporting Technology has increased our ability to track our vehicles in real time and communicate necessary information to drivers instantly. Our GPS tracking system allows us to see real time traffic before our drivers become delayed. This gives us the ability to possibly bypass the traffic by rerouting the vehicle or to communicate with the school or home if there are to be delays. We receive daily safety report cards on each driver to ensure regular safe driving practices. The drivers are equipped with a mobile program giving the them necessary information regarding any medical or behavioral needs of the child as well as special instructions. From our headquarters dispatch center, we can see in real time the status of a transport (i.e, enroute, delayed, waiting for pick up, or completed). Because our drivers are experienced in working with children and adolescents, we ask them to be very aware of their passengers during their daily transports. They will never provide any therapeutic services, but they will assess behaviors and report any notable behaviors or concerns directly through the appointment tracking software. Each appointment generates a report outlining the route, times of pick up and drop off and any notes created by the driver.
Our Fleet Safety is our commitment. All of our vehicles are on a vigorous maintenance schedule and are inspected daily by the drivers, and monthly by our fleet manager with a 40 point inspection, oil change and tire rotation, and annually by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Outfitted with state of the art technology, our vehicles are always in contact with our dispatch center. For our passengers comfort, the interior of the vehicles are vacuumed and detailed regularly.
Our Difference The Connecticut Branches philosophy supports the bigger picture of the passengers we transport. Rather than simply transporting a passenger from point A to point B such as a taxi service, we understand that through the development of an individualized transportation plan we in turn support the social, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and academic success of our passengers.
